Thomas Worland

(11 Jun 1774 - 13 Jul 1850)

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION - Kolb, Olive Lewis, Worland, Wilfrid V., and Worland, Rev. T. Vincent, One Man’s Family, The History and Genealogy of the Worland Family in America 1662-1962 (Shelbyville, Indiana: The Authors, 1968) FHL Book 929.273 W893

NOTE - BIRTH - A search for a birth record in either Charles County or Prince George’s County, Maryland for Thomas was not successful. There is no source citation in Kolb’s book, "One Man's Family: The Histoy and Genealogy of the Worland Family In America", as to where this exact date of birth came from. Because much of this information came from family members, it may have been in some personal family records, which is not cited. Another important issue with One Man’s Family, is that much of the information contained in this publication has no source citations. It had been acknowledged in the preface of this book that much of the information came from oral interviews with descendants of this family. Some of those descendants were not many generations removed from those discussed in this book. For instance, one of those interviewed was the great grandson of Thomas Worland.
A bio of St. Vincent's Church in Shelby County, Indiana, found in Atlas of Shelby Co., Indiana, published by J. H. Beers Pub. Co., in 1880, states this: "Thomas Worland was born in Maryland June 11, 1774; moved to Scott County, Ky., in 1796; thence to Shelby County, Ind. where he died in 1850. Assuming that this information was obtained from family members, his date of birth most likely came from a family bible.

NOTE - Thomas's link to John Worland II:
"First I give devise and bequeath all my estate both personal and real to my beloved wife Mary and to my five youngest children, Thomas Worland, Walter Worland, Barnabas Worland, Lucy Worland, & Rebecca Worland"

1790 NOTE - According to the 1790 census, Mary Worland, now a widow, is living in Washington County, Maryland with three male children, most likely her three youngest sons; Thomas, Walter, and Barnaby. There are, also, four females, living in this household; Mary, herself, the two younger daughters, Lucy and Rebecca, mentioned earlier, and one unknown female. This unknown female may be one of the Murtle women seen living in the John Worland household on the 1776 state census

1793 NOTE - “By 1793, the year that twenty-five heads of Catholic Families living on Elkhorn petitioned the Diocese of Baltimore for a pastor, there were 300 Catholic families in Kentucky. Among St. Francis’ settlement period families were those headed by......” Included in the list of these settlers were Barnaby, Mary, Thomas, and Walter Worland.

1806 BIOGRAPHY - Thomas Worland was a signer of an appeal sent to Bishop Carroll in Maryland, regarding the need for a priest in the parish of St. Francis in Scott County, Kentucky. They enclosed in their appeal the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to furnish a horse and pay traveling expenses for the priest. They stated in their letter that they had "built a church, purchased a piece of land, built a house with offices, and made the improvements for the residence of a priest, which included some furnishings and twoo nego servants". Thomas Worlands signature is included in this petition.

1808 BIOGRAPHY - I James Leak, T.C. Jenkins, James Gough and Thomas Worland, applied by letter to Bishop John Carroll for instructions in regard to a proposed sale of the church property in Scott, and the investment of the proceeds of the sale in more desirable realty for church purposes.
(Webb, Hon. Ben J., "The Centenary of Catholicity in Kentucky" (Utica, Ky.: McDowell Publications) pg 89

NOTE - There is also evidence that Thomas probably returned to Maryland at least once on errands for the Catholic Church. The following letter from Father Edward Dominic Fenwich, O.P., to Archbishop Carroll in Maryland, indicates this, “I have troubled you with so many of my scrowls of late that I am almost ashamed to attempt it again. But so favorable an opportunity as this by Mr. Thomas Worland, trustee of St. Francis Chapel, in Scott County, will, I trust, be a sufficient apology".
(O’Daniel, Victor Francis, A Light of the Church in Kentucky (Washington, D.C.: The Dominicana, 1932) pg 126

1825 BIOGRAPHY - Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Worland, of Scott County, Ky., came to visit Mrs. Nancy Young, a sister of Mrs. Worland, and settled permanently in 1826. John Newton and family came in 1827, and THOMAS WORLAND and family in 1828. The latter was a generous and pious Christian, and with him the Priests and Missionaries always found a pleasant and comfortable home.
