Subject: Re: [MDCHARLE] Ryce - Rice family of Charles, P.G., and St. Marys Counties
[Thread]
I'm looking to contact anyone how has come across the Rice or Ryce family in southern Maryland and trade notes. I'm looking for all and any descendants information. My wife's Grandmother was Annie Mae (Ryce) Hayden daughter of Samuel Wilson Ryce. I have been working on this line for about 2 years now and have a extensive tree, but am still missing tons individuals and dates. Thanks,
Peter Traggorth
My sister, Mary June Higgs Ryce Mattingly, completed a book back in 2004 on the Ryce family 1810-2003 for her children. She married to Daniel Webster Ryce in July 1957. She has that Samuel Wilson Rice born abt 1872 was the son of James Richard Rice ( B. 1840- Died Jan. 15, 1908 in Ryceville, Md, Buried at Bethel Cem. Budds Creek) and Mary L. Welch (1852-1917). James was the son of John Barnette Ryce born abt. 1810 and Margaret Welch. My sister does Sameuls decendants. She followed the line of his brother Daniel Webster Rice. He was born July 10, 1870 and died, October 3, 1969. He is buried at St. Ignatius Cem. Hilltop, MD.
Darlene Crank
Darlene, Just a little correction. Daniel Webster born July 10, 1870 did not die Oct 3, 1969. That was when his wife died. He died in 1948 and is buried at Christ Episcopal, Wayside, Md. You probably just looked at your notes wrong. No problem. Just wanted to clarify for others.
Patty
I have the wife of John Barnett Ryce as Margaret Bleathen (not sure where I got the surname) but if so, she was probably a sister of Mary Ann Bleathen who married William D. Hill in 1837.
Your record states her name as Margaret Welch. Who were her parents?
Linda Reno
Margaret's maiden name has been a mystery. I would be interested in any information you have on the Bleathen family. I have never heard that name before. It is believed by some researchers that the Welch name is likely a mistake that was recorded on her death certificate and then marked out. Margaret is thought to have been from Charles County. Any help on the Bleathen family would be greatly appreciated.
Patty
As you'll note below, Mrs. Mary Ann Hill referred to Mrs. Ryce as her sister. Mary Ann Bleathen married William D. Hill, 04 Feb 1837 in St. Mary's County. William D. Hill was the son of Henry Hill and Margaret Davis (Margaret Davis was a sister of my ancestress, Rebecca Davis who married James Burroughs).
There was a Samuel Blethen listed as head of household in St. Mary's Co. in 1790: 1M over 16; 2M under 16; 4F. Mary Ann, b. 1810 and Margaret were born 1812 so they weren't even born yet, but I'd start with Samuel at least.
This case was transcribed by Tom Jennings and sent to me several years ago. I think you'll find it most useful and informative.

Thank you so much for this info. Very interesting. I have seen and heard about the issues with the land but have never seen the info on Mary Ann Hill before. Is Margaret Davis and Rebecca Davis who married James Burroughs, the daughters of Philip & Elizabeth Davis? Are you aware of any other information on Mary Ann Bleathen's siblings? Are there any other recorded Bleathen's marriages in St. Mary's?
Patty
Rebecca Davis and Margaret Davis were the children of Philemon Davis (son of George Davis and Susanna Lyon) and Elizabeth S. Waters (dau. of Thomas Waters, Jr. and his wife, Margaret whose maiden name I haven't yet discovered).
I'm sorry, but I have absolutely nothing else on the Bleathens and there's no other marriages.
Linda Reno
Thank you for the inf. Now, do you know anything about Susanna Lyon's family? I have seen Susanna Lyon married to Aquilla Burroughs but not to George Davis.
Patty,
You're welcome. My Susanna Lyon was the daughter of John Lyon (d. 1805, son of Richard Lyon and wife, Rachel who m. second, Bowles Billingsley) and Lydia Wood (dau. of Samuel Wood and Ann Briscoe). I'm descended from Ann Briscoe twice--once by each marriage. Ann Briscoe (dau. of Philip Briscoe and Susanna Swann) m. first, John Davis and second, Samuel Wood.
The wife of Aquilla Burroughs was Susanna Elizabeth Lyon, daughter of William Lyon and Elizabeth T. Davis, her father not known, but he was a son of Benjamin Davis and Sarah Thorn.
All of the Lyons (in my opinion) of Charles and St. Mary's County are descended from Henry Lyon (d. 1778 in Charles Co., husband of Ann Morris) and his brother, Richard Lyon (d. ca1735 in St. Mary's Co., husband of Rachel).
Linda Reno
Thanks Linda. This is a bit further back than I've tracked my line. I appreciate the info. I agree with you that the Lyon's are likely all related. And Henry seems to be a common denominator. I have some information on Henry and his line. I haven't heard of Richard & Rachel. That's interesting. Do you believe his family stayed in the area? Do you have other Lyon's other than John & daughter Susanna connected to Richard and Rachel? My Lyon is William A. Lyon (1821-1887). Appreciate your sharing.
