Death
Arnet “AI” Furr graduated from Veedersburg High School in April, 1942. He was sworn into the service on December 14, 1942, and accepted into the aviation branch of the Army Air Corps. After training at various air fields, he became a member of the Eighth Air Force 457th Bomb Group, 749th Squadron stationed at RAF Glatton, England. He was the pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress, flying his first mission on August 3, 1944. On November 8, 1944, the squadron was returning from its mission (Arnet’s 28th) when the B-17 (Bad Times Inc. II) flying to Furr’s left slipped into his, shearing it in half. The plane went down just past the Dutch coast. There were no survivors. Arnet was awarded the air medal “for exceptionally meritorious achievement while serving over Germany and enemy occupied Europe. The courage, coolness, and skill displayed by Lieutenant Furr on these occasions reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.” He also received two Oak Leaf Clusters and, posthumously, the Purple Heart.
