Notes
Death
Sergt. Furr Awarded DSC Posthumously For Valor on LuzonSergt. William C. Furr, 33-year old Washington infantryman who was killed by Japanese fire after single handedly wiping out five entrenched Japanese positions during action with the 32nd Division on Luzon last March, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. In a recent ceremony in the office of Brig. Gen. Robert M. Young, commanding general of the Military District of Washington, Sergt. Furr’s widow, Mrs. Lillian O. Furr, 3119 North Seventh street, Arlington, accepted the award. Although fatally wounded by enemy fire in taking the fifth position, Sergt. Furr, “through his extraordinary heroism,” succeeded in destroying, in addition, three machine guns, numerous rifles and “an undetermined number of the enemy,” the citation accompanying the decoration said. Sergt. Furr was employed by the Briggs Clarifier Co. prior to entering the service in May, 1943. His mother, Mrs. T. C. Furr, lives at 1513 Wilson boulevard, Arlington.
