Death
Ray Robert Furr, 91, of Fairmont, died on Sunday (Dec. 9, 2007) at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. He was born on April 27, 1916, in Hepzibah, son of the late Lawrence and Anna Jenkins Furr. Mr. Furr proudly served in the United States Army in World War II. He was stationed in Germany at the Medics 132 Evacuation Hospital. He worked as a coal miner at the Rachel mines. Ray was a member of the American Legion Unit 31 in Shinnston. In his earlier years he enjoyed camping, hunting and playing the guitar with a group of friends who had a band together. Ray is survived by his loving wife, Helen Louise Barker Shingleton Furr; two step-sons, Robert Shingleton and his wife Donna Marie of Mannington and Russell Shingleton and his wife “Tiny” of Grafton; his sisters, Bernice Abel of Fairmont and Louella Orsini of Fairmont; a granddaughter, Tonya Shingleton of Mannington; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Furr; and his sisters, Opal Demastus, Dorothy Elza, Mildred Hall and Mary Looman. Friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont today from 1-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Evangelist Aaron B. Justice Sr. officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens. Full military rites will be conducted at grave side by the local Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.Times West Virginian, Janaury 11, 2007
