Death
Herbert “Herbie” Clark Furr, 84, of Ranson passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020 at the Reston Hospital Center, Reston, Virginia. He was born May 16, 1936 in Jefferson County. He was the son of the late Wilbur J. Furr and Mae L. (Renner) Furr. Herbie was a machinist for Volvo/Mack Truck in Hagerstown, Maryland and retired after 25 years of service. After retirement, he worked 10 years at The National Park Service in Harpers Ferry in maintenance and grounds keeping. He was of Christian faith and attended services at Leetown Baptist Church and Summit Point Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Furr played football and graduated from Charles Town High School, class of 1955. He attended Potomac State College. Herbie loved to sing gospel music and was in a quartet. He played fast pitch softball and coached Pony League baseball for many years. Herbie loved to be outside, especially in his garden tending to his tomato plants. He could plant anything and make it grow. Herbie was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in May 1960. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, (which they celebrated last Thursday), Mary Frances (Magaha) Furr, at home; sons, Gregory “Greg” S. Furr and wife Melinda Leslie Furr and Rick Alan Furr, both of Ranson; grandchildren, Whitney Ann Goliwas and husband Paul and Austin Matthew Furr; sister, Mary E. Chrisman, of Leetown; as well as, numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Goldie M. (Furr) Dunn and brother, Randolph H. “Randy” Furr. A celebration of Herbie’s life will be at a later date. Arrangements are by the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
