The Tree Streets Historic District, located in the City of Waynesboro, Virginia
740 Maple Ave. Hubert and Ethel Furr House. 1928-30. Story-and-a-half Craftsman bungalow of cobblestone veneer or construction. The metal-sheathed gable roof has a stuccoed gable dormer. The front porch has square-section cobblestone pillars with an arched stucco span. Other features include a poured-concrete foundation with a basement garage with a fiberglass door, an interior brick flue with a cobblestone cap, 1/1 windows with decorative upper sash, and a glassed-in back porch with a stuccoed pantry. Hubert Harrison and Ethel May Furr began construction of this house in 1928 and completed it in 1930. They employed a black man to do the rock work--probably Jacob Fuller, who built similar houses in the Port Republic Road neighborhood during the same period. H. H. Furr was an electrician, and he died from electrocution a year after completing his house. (Lois Furr Bradley)

Notes
Death
Funeral services for Hubert Furr 30-year old youth who was killed Tuesday while at work near Baker's Spring for the Du Pont Rayon Company, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 o'clock at his late home, the Rev. H. C. Marsh of Main Street Methodist Church officiating. Interment will take place in Riverview. Young Furr, according to information secured by the News-Virginian, was killed when he came in contact with a high tension wire on an electric pole where he was working. Another man was at the foot of the pole on the ground but heard no outcry nor any sound. When he looked up he saw young Furr hanging by his safety strap. He then rushed toward the plant for assistance. Dr. Hawkins hurried to the scene and after the youth was brought down by means of a ladder to the ground, began efforts to restore life. As recorded in the News-Virginian Tuesday all possible effort was made by Dr. Hawkins and nine employes of the Virginia Public Service Company as well as others assisting. It is believed that life was extinct when brought to the ground, although this statement is not verified by a physician's report. The DuPont Rayon Company would issue no formal statement today, but young Furr had been a regular employee of the company for 15 months dating back to construction days. He was rated as a first-class electrician. Dr. J. B. Catlett, county coroner, held an inquest Tuesday evening. Surviving the deceased are his father and mother, Postmaster and Mrs. J. H. Furrs, his widow, formerly Miss Ethel Carter, two small children, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Johnson of Staunton and Mrs. Durwood Fry of Winston-Salem, N. C. Pallbearers for the funeral will be: Active-H. E. Lucas Frank Sweet, Gale Leap, Gordon McGann, C. D. Christie and Lyle Hiserman; honorary, W. H. Custard, R. L. Hiserman, Dr. Ernest Mosby, Dr. F. P. Floyd, Charles Yancey, D. D. Young, E. D. Weaver, Major Landon Davis and W. J. McCracken.Endnotes
