Notes
Death
Stewart J. Furr, who spent most of his life in Shenandoah County, just recently moving to Washington, D. C., died in the Memorial Hospital, Winchester, on Wednesday morning, August 19, at 10:30 o’clock. Mr. Furr came to Strasburg on Saturday to visit his friend, Lester Knee, and was suddenly taken ill Monday night and rushed to the hospital where he was operated on for gall stones about four o’clock Tuesday morning and never regained consciousness. Mr. Furr was born in Amherst County January 26, 1855, thus he was in his 76th year. In his early twenties he came to Shenandoah County, living at Patmos, Woodstock, Toms Brook and Strasburg. It was in Strasburg that he spent most of his life, leaving here only just a few years ago to go to Washington where he continued to follow his trade of carpentering. On December 25, 1879 he married Miss Savilla Kibler of Calvary, this county. To them were born four children, William C. Furr of Washington; Mrs. Nannie Sallee and Lloyd Furr, Toledo, O., and Earl Furr of Cumberland, Md. Mrs. Furr died in 1893 and Mr. Furr later married Miss Mary E. Ritenour of Maurertown. By this marriage he is survived by his widow and a daughter, Mrs. Maud Lambert, and a son Frank, both of Washington, twins, Paul and Pauline having preceded him in death. Paul died in France during the World War and Pauline died in Strasburg. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the United Brethren Church at Toms Brook conducted by the Rev. Thomas Morgan. Interment was in Harrisville Cemetery. The pallbearers were H. S. Stoneburner, George Middleton, E. R. Strosnider, Arthur Pangle, Chris Shipe and J. W. Pangle. Mr. Furr won many friends wherever he went by his friendly smile and affable disposition. In his work he was most careful and honest.Strasburg News, Strasburg Virginia, August 26, 1931
