James Owen Laird Sr., 81, of Richton, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Convarest in Petal.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at First Baptist Church of Runnelstown, with burial in Big Creek Cemetery. The Rev. Henry Freeman will officiate.
He was employed with Masonite Corp. and served on the USS New York with the United States Navy during World War ll.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Runnelstown. He played country music with his uncle on WAML Radio for many years and enjoyed playing music. He was a graduate of Mississippi School of Agriculture.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Polly Laird; one son, Jerry G. Laird; parents, J.B. and Mae Laird; and one brother, Howard Laird.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine Y. Laird of Richton; one son and daughter-in-law, James Owen Laird Jr. and Judy Laird of Laurel; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty L. and Robert "Buddy" Flowers of Laurel; one sister, Willie Mae Bullock of Ellisville; one stepson, Steve Cooper of Montgomery, Ala.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be A.C. Horne, Kelly Carter, Jerry Carter, D.L.Hathorn, R.P. Laird and Ray Morris.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church in Runnelstown.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel is in charge of arrangements.
