James Owen Laird Jr., 74, of Laurel gained his wings and went to be with our Heavenly father Friday, Nov. 16, 2018 at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. He was born Saturday, June 10, 1944 in Perry County.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Laurel and the burial will follow in Moss Memory Gardens. Brother David Hagan and Brother Chad Landrum will officiate.
James was a one-of-a-kind man and was well known for his mechanic business “Laird Safety Service.” He served Jones County for more than 40 years, working on brakes, alignments and suspension on all local cars.
James was also known for his beautiful collection of 1957 Chevrolets that he had restored. He was a kind man who always thought about others. He never met a stranger, and he was always telling people jokes. His favorite punch line was, “You never know if someone is having a bad day, so I tell them my jokes to make them laugh.” He loved to see a smile on someone’s face.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Melissa Karen Laird; father James Laird Sr.; mother Polly Laird; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. James Morren and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Laird; and brother Jerry Laird.
Survivors include his wife Judy Laird; son William Laird (Shauna); grandson Miles Merrell; granddaughters Megan Yarbrough (Andrew) and Autumn Laird; great-granddaughters Raeanna Merrell and Oaklynn Yarbrough; sister Betty Jane Flowers; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Boykin, Billy Busby, Duane Shelby, Kyle Shelby, Matt Wiginton, Keith Morris and David Palmer.Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Laird and Kenneth Graham.
