Obituary, Jennie CarellaSavannah Evening Press, Tuesday, September 7, 1976
Mrs.Jennie Carellas, family head, dies at 90
Mrs. Demetra "Jennie" Carellas, 90, of 619 Tibet Ave., matriarch of a Savannah family that sent all five sons into the armed forces during World War II, died Monday night at the St. Joseph's hospital after a short illness.
Mrs. Carellas, widow of George P. Carellas, was born in Sparta, Greece, and moved to Savannah in 1905 during the great migration of Europeans to the United States in the early part of the century. During World War II, she displayed five stars in the window of her home to denote the military service of her five sons in the European and Asiatic-Pacific theaters of war. She often recalled those years as "one of the proudest of my life." All five sons returned home at the end of the war.
Mrs. Carellas was a member of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Athena Petras of Birmingham, Ala.,, Mrs. Basiliki Klonis of Gaineville, Fla., Miss Coule Carellas of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Eugenia Angelakos and Miss Pina Carellas both of Savannah; her five sons, Leon Carellas of Miami, Fla., Gus, Basil, Tony and Alex, all of Savannah; two brothers, Basil Leopold of Savannah and Spero Leopold of Sparta, Greece; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Two late brothers of Mrs. Carellas, Peter and George Leopold, operated the Leopold Brothers ice cream parlor along with her brother Basil for a number of years.
Trisagion services will be held 8 p.m. today. Sipple's Mortuary is in charge. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church with burial in Greenwich Cemetery.
