Alexander George Carellas, 95, of Savannah, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, surrounded by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, George P. and Jennie Leopold Carellas; four brothers, Leon, Tony, Basil and Gus; five sisters, Mary Zarafonetis, Athena Petras, Eugenia Angelakos, Basiliki "Bee" Klonis, and Pina Carellas. He was born in Savannah and was a graduate of Benedictine Military School, Class of 1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of 1942, along with his 4 brothers. He was in the European Theater during World War II, serving with the 100th Evacuation Hospital. His mother's brothers founded Leopold's Ice Cream Company, which is still in operation today by his cousin and his wife, Stratton and Mary Leopold. Alex was retired from Civil Service, having worked as a Supply Sergeant for the homes that were being built at Hunter Army Airfield. He also worked with Civil Service at Fort Stewart Army Airfield during the war Alex was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church. Alex is survived by his devoted friend, Mary Ruth Cetchovich, of Savannah; a sister, Coule Carellas, of Baltimore, MD and many nieces and nephews Including Dorie Moskos, (Jim), Jean Zarafonetis both of Baltimore, MD and Connie Lane, (Hank), of Atlanta, Basil Zarafonetis (Roxanne), George A. (Michelle) and George B. Carellas (Laurel) both of Atlanta, GA, Father James Carellas of Pittsburg, PA, two close friends, Elmer Brannen, and Robert Rieley both of Savannah. Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 pm Tuesday Nov. 17, 2015 at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, with a Trisagion Service at 7:00pm. Funeral Service: 11:00 am Wednesday at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church with Fr Vasile Mihai and Fr. James Carellas officiating. Interment: Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorial Contributions: St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church or Island Hospice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bubba Victor and his staff for all of their love and support during this most trying times.
