Obituary
Obituary of George E. LeopoldGeorge Elias Leopold, 85, died Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital after a long illness. A well-known Savannah confectionery operator, he was a native of Sparta, Greece. He came to this country in 1903. He arrived in Savannah in 1907 and entered the employ of the Savannah Light Co., now the Savannah Electric & Power Co.
In 1918 he purchased the northeast corner of Habersham and Gwinnett streets with his brothers Peter and Basic Leopold and operated the confectionery business.
Leopold was a communicant of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church and a member of Zerabbbabel Lodge, F&AM, and Alee Temple of the Mystic Shrine.
Survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Janie G. Carellas, Savannah; Mrs. Mary Theofilakos and Mrs. Evangeline Kachulis of Sparta, Greece; four brothers, Peter and Basil Leopold, Savannah; Anastasios E. Leopold and Spero E. Leopold of Sparta; several nieces and nephews.
Henderson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge.

According to son, Stratton Leopold, Panagiotis and his brother, George, originally settled in Brazil, Indiana when they came to the U.S. There was a Zarafonitis family there and they may have initially stayed with them.
