Individual Details
William Louis Pappas
(17 Nov 1921 - 12 Jul 1998)
Carol Kostakos Petranek remembers: "Uncle Bill was quite the character. He always joked with us and made us laugh. He teased us children and gave us pennies. Sometimes his teased us a little too much and we would cry, but we always went back for more."
Comment by Catherine Pappas Kostakos, Bill's sister:
Bill always had a joking, jovial personality and he was a prankster, but when he came home from the war he was very quiet and subdued. It took a long time for him to regain his old personality back.
STORY:
Sunday night Oct 30 1938... My mother and Aunt Kay, listenedto the original "War of the Worlds". My Uncle Bill came rushing hom ea couple of hours later worried about an alien invasion. As always the graciousbig sisters (NOT!), they laughed and teased him unmercifully for years after!

Comment by Catherine Pappas Kostakos, Bill's sister: My brother Bill was drafted and served in the Army Infantry for two years. He was sent to England, right in the thick of the war. He was sent wherever he was needed. When he came home, he refused to talk about any of his experiences. When we asked questions, he would get up and walk out of the room. For a while after he came home, he would whisper and not talk in a normal voice. He spoke out of one side of his mouth. We think it’s because he spent so much time in a foxhole where men had to speak very quietly. Bill always had a joking, jovial personality and he was a prankster, but when he came home from the war he was very quiet and subdued. It took a long time for him to regain his old personality back. Both of my brothers served until the war ended.
Comment by Lois Pappas Ryan, Bill's daughter: I asked Bobby [Lois' husband] about the conversations he had with my father, and he said that he was a mechanic in the Air Force and never mentioned anything about fighting in Normandy. I know he was in Germany and France and possibly Austria, because he brought back some bayonets with him, which I have here from one of the countries.
