Comments by Catherine Pappas, Nick's sister:
Within a week, both of my brothers, Nick and Bill, received letters from the draft board. Their experiences in World War II were totally opposite. After receiving his letter, Nick became very sick with double pneumonia. It was touch and go with him and he was being cared for at home. The doctor said he was too weak and his resistence was too low to go into the military, but he was drafted anyway. Probably because of his medical condition, he was not sent overseas but was sent to an Army base at Yuma, Arizona, a place where the doctor said was the best environment for him. He was there for two years. In Yuma, he met a lot of Greek people and he was even invited into their homes for dinners. He came home on leave a couple of times and told us what a good time he was having there. I don’t know exactly what he did in Yuma. Both of my brothers served in the army until the war ended.
