As he had the position of Inspector in the Telegraph Construction branch of the Post Master Generals Dept he was immediately appointed as a Lieutenant & posted to the 4th Division Signals. He was awarded the Military Cross 4 Oct 1816 for "conspicuous gallantry during operations" & was promoted to Captain 15 Apr 1917. He also received a Bar to the MC on 1 Nov 1917 & was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's despatch of 7 Nov 1917 for "distinguished & gallant service". He was killed on 22 Jul 1918 when his horse fell whilst riding in a Divisional Race Meeting & he fractured his skull in the accident
