Individual Details

Joanna Sarah Noyes

(10 Sep 1807 - 14 Jun 1838)

"Joanna married Aug. 14, 1833 her mother's cousin, Samuel Hayes of New Haven (son of Ezekiel Hayes), merchant to the West Indies. She went out here twice and finally died at Trinidad with only Timothy Dwight, an old friend, near her, and Negroes. Her husband was at another island. She was exquisite in figure and complexion with very effective coarse curling red hair. She had a very clear mind which was finely cultivated by her father. She was too sarcastic to be pleasing to most people, but became very religious before her death. She left no children though she had one or two stillborn ones. We have some of her clothes sent home from the West Indies. Joanna Shepard is thought to be somewhat like her in figure and white skin. Her letters were beautifully written. She lost one child from wading through snow drifts on a journey home to Putney, in a stage from New Haven. The stage stopped short of Putney and she, coming from the West Indies, would go on. Miscarried soon after reaching home."
Elinor Mead Howells, "Hayes Ancestry" Pepperell, Mass. "The Willows" Aug. 18, 1876. (Joanna's aunt)
