Notes
Death
"Aunt Martha had a severe attack of pleurisy, but had somewhat recovered and all thought she would soon be well... The first that we were really alarmed about her was July 28th. I called there then and found that she had not left her bed for two days and had failed greatly since we last saw her. I called at the Doc's close by and asked him if he had not better send a telegram to Mary... Her death occurred Aug. 2, 10 1/2 o'clock, p.m. We (my wife and I) being the only relatives now living in town, attended to the funeral ceremonies... Aunt M's age was 72. She had a brother and two sisters living who were at the funeral"Samuel Gilbert Smith, W. Brattleboro, VT. to RBH, Aug. 12, 1872
