KANNAPOLIS — A Kannapolis man charged with the weekend shooting death of his girlfriend made his first appearance Monday in Cabarrus County District Court. William Andrew Morgan, 25, of 724 Murphy St. was placed in Cabarrus County Jail with no bond after being charged in the murder of Mary Ellen Furr, 28. In his first statement, Morgan told Kannapolis detectives that he had come home and found Miss Furr's body, said Det. R.A. Adams. But detectives later learned that the couple had gone to a local bar and returned to the residence together, Adams said. In a second statement, Morgan said that the gun accidentally discharged from across the room, according to Adams. The autopsy report revealed that the weapon was not that far away from the body, Adams said this morning. What he said in his statement was not supported by the physical evidence The murder was the city's second of 1992.
