Death

Laura Cathy DeMarcus, 55, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Carolinas Healthcare System-NorthEast, Concord, after a period of declining health. She was born Jan. 20, 1961 in Iredell County, the daughter of the late Marvin Eugene DeMarcus and Gladys Catherine Furr DeMarcus. Cathy was employed working in the cotton mill industry for many years which included Maglaa and later Cannon Mills Company in Kannapolis. She was very involved in the work of her church, Gospel Light Baptist Church, Concord, and she loved her Lord. She loved to travel and shared many experiences with her family. She most recently enjoyed a cruise to the Bahamas. She also is remembered as a lady who liked to shop. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Norman DeMarcus and Melvin DeMarcus. Survivors include her daughter, Laura Cogdill; one brother, Elvin DeMarcus; one niece, Laurajean DeMarcus; a great-niece, Mellie DeMarcus; her uncle, Walter Barbee; her aunt, Ruby Williams; and her dog, Taco. Service and Visitation: The funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, officiated by Rev. Terry Bowen. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service. Whitley's Funeral Home is assisting the family.
