Death
FURR, Mr. Joseph Strong Sr., 93, of Chester, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Solomon I. and Frances York Furr; his wife, Emma Battle Smith Furr; and two brothers, William W. Furr and Robert B. Furr. Mr. Furr retired from Roadway Express, Inc. as City Terminal Manager in 1983. After retiring, Mr. Furr was active in the early years of the development of the Charlotte Trolley System. He helped in the purchase and restoration of the Dilworth Car 85 that his father drove until it was retired in 1939. He was a long-time member of Sardis Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and later attended Chester United Methodist Church. After moving to Chester eight years ago, he began volunteering at John Randolph Medical Center. In 2013, he was presented with the Frist Humanitarian Award for service to patients. Mr. Furr is survived by his son, Joe S. Furr Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Chesterfield; two granddaughters, Jennie Furr Sister and her husband, William, of Sunderland, Mass., and Joanna Furr McVicker and her husband, Michael, of Chester; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Joseph McVicker of Chester and Eliza John McVicker of Chester; and a brother, Franklin E. Furr and his wife, Betty, of Fort Mill, S.C. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Chester, Va. On Friday, November 28, the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harry & Bryant Funeral Home in Charlotte, N.C. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, at Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, in honor of his granddaughter, Eliza, Virginia Chapter, 1500 Forest Ave., Suite 124, Richmond, Va. 23229.Endnotes
