Death
Emma Battle Smith Furr, of Charlotte, died November 21, 2002 at the Harris Hospice of Presbyterian Hospital. She was born in Bracey, VA on August 7, 1919, a daughter of the late John Wright and Emma Battle Harrison Smith. She was a graduate of Peace College in Raleigh. She married Joe Strong Furr on July 29, 1943, at the Duke University Chapel. She and Joe moved to Charlotte in 1947. She was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church.Besides her husband Joe, she is survived by her son, Joe Strong Furr, Jr. and his wife Joan Hood Furr of Richmond, VA; granddaughters, Jennie Furr Sisler and her husband William of Sunderland, MA, and Joanna Furr McVicker and her husband Michael of Richmond, VA; sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Smith of Henderson, NC; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Marie Powell, and brother, Thomas Harrison Smith, of Henderson, NC, and a niece, Marie Young, of Mt. Olive, NC. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 25, 2002 at Harry and Bryant "Chapel in the Oaks', 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, with the Reverend Dr. Jane Foble and the Reverend Alice Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends at Harry and Bryant on Sunday from 4 to 5:30 PM. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital, PO Box 31276, Charlotte, NC 28233. Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mrs. Furr.
