She lived on a farm on Rocky River near Norwood, North Carolina. Eliza was a small, frail woman but very industrious and thrifty. The Civil War left her a widow with seven children to rear. It was during the Reconstruction period after the Civil War that she had this difficult task. She did a good job of this. Among the many things she did to provide for her family was to make their clothes. She carded the wool, spun it into yarn, and wove the yarn into woolen cloth from which she made dresses for her daughters and shirts and breeches for her sons. She also made the woolen cloth for dresses for two of her Kendall granddaughters. Zoe Blanche Kendall Martin, her grauddaughter, remembers these dresses vividly. The yard was dyed with homemade dyes in red, green, and brown colors. Black walnut shells were used to dye the yarn brown. Zoe would have but one of these new dresses a year. Last year's Sunday dress was this year's everyday dress.
