Death

Lester R. Furr, Sr., 82, died Monday, July 6, 1998 at his residence in Wesson of heart failure. Services were held on Wednesday, July 8 at Wesson Baptist Church with burial in the Wesson Cemetery. Brookhaven Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Mr. Furr was a native of Wesson and a member of Wesson Baptist Church for over 50 years, serving in nearly every capacity of service including Deacon, Sunday school Director and Teacher, as well as chairman and member of numerous committees. He was a graduate of Copiah Lincoln Agricultural High School in 1936, Copiah Lincoln Junior College in 1938, Jackson Commercial College in Business and attended the University of Alabama and Millsaps College. Mr. Furr was the co-owner of Wesson Pharmacy for 21 years. He was an employee of the United States Postal Service and served as postmaster for the town of Wesson. Mr. Furr served as an officer in the United States Air Force in WWII, remained in the Air Force Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Civic affiliation include; Member of the Board of Trustees for Co-Lin Jr. College for 24 years, served as Secretary of the Board for the majority of that time; President of the Mississippi Junior College Trustee Association 1979-1980; Charter member of the C-Lin Community College Foundation, Inc., serving as its president for 15 years; President of the Co-Lin Alumni Association in 1949, and served on the Alumni board for many years; Selected as Alumnus of the Year at Co-Lin in 1974; Presented the Service Award by the Alumni Association in 1984; LIfetime member of the Wolfpack Club; Member of the Wesson Lions Club for 49 years, serving in all offices of the club; Named as a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Club International; Member of The First Families of Mississippi; Served as President of the Wesson Cemetery Association for many years; Served as an officer of the Wesson Historical Preservation Society; and received the Citizen of the year award by the Wesson Chamber of Commerce in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Katie Kennedy Furr; son, Richard Kennedy Furr, Wesson, sister, Margaret Furr Lee, Jackson; 2 grandchildren, Abby Elizabeth and Perry Katherine Furr, Wesson. Mr. Furr is preceded in death by one son, Lester Randolph Furr, Jr., and parents, William Henry Furr and Lean Dorsey Furr.
