Notes
Death
SHREVEPORT, LA - On Friday, April 15, 2005, Lucy Furr died at home suddenly. Lucy is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Raymond Tobias Furr, Jr.; son, David Furr, and daughter in law, Karen Furr, of Oklahoma City, OK; daughter, Raychel Furr Bartek, and son-in-law, Ron Bartek, of Annandale, Virginia; four grandchildren, Byron, Keith and Stuart Andrus of Annandale, VA, and Chris Rodman of Oklahoma City; and, 2 great-grandchildren Kyle and Elizabeth Rodman of Oklahoma City. Lucy was born on May 16, 1930, in Oxford, Mississippi. She attended the University of Mississippi where she met her future husband, Ray. They married on September 17, 1950. Lucy returned to college in 1960 and graduated from Centenary College with a BA in Education in 1963. While teaching 4th grade at Summer Grove Elementary from 1965-1970, she earned her Master's Degree in Education from Northwestern State University. Additionally, Lucy obtained a medical record librarian degree from the University of Tennessee/Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN. Friends and family will best remember Lucy's love for her family and her cats. Because of Lucy’s interest in medical education and research, she prearranged with the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport to have her remains donated to aid in medical teaching and research. She felt strongly that without such donations there could be no doctors, no surgery, no alleviation of disease or repair of injury. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Shreveport on Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers Lucy requested, that memorial donations be made to the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) 2001 Arlington Blvd., Suite 209; Arlington, VA 22202 to support scientific research to help her grandson, Keith, and other children who are afflicted with Friedreich's ataxia, an incurable life- shortening genetic disorder. A mom, wife, grandmother and friend -- we all will miss her.The Times, Shreveport, Louisiana, April 22, 2005
