Source: The Southern Advocate (Ashland, MS), Thursday, 27 June 1935James M. Whiteside, 77, died Tuesday, June 25, 1935, at his home near Hickory Flat. He had been in bad health for some time and his death was not unexpected. Mr. Whiteside was one of Benton county's best citizens. Fifty-three years ago he was married to Miss Mary Ida Furr. To them were born thirteen children, ten of whom, along with Mrs. Whiteside survive. They are: Mrs. Pearl Bellew, Potts Camp; Mrs. Minnie Elliott, Water Valley; Mrs. Lena Goode, C. L. Whiteside, Mrs. Ora Wilbanks, D. T. Whiteside, Hickory Flat; Mrs. Carrie Mills, Potts Camp; Mrs. Maude Hankins, Hickory Flat; Mrs. D. E. Beal, Abbeville, and I. H. Whiteside, Hickory Flat. Surviving also are thirty-five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Burial was in the Ebenezer cemetery south of Hickory Flat Wednesday morning, services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. H. Ledbetter, assisted by Rev. L. M. James and Rev. R. M. Papesan.
