Death

ALBEMARLE — Vernie Irene Furr Almond, 78, 24592 Canton Road, died Wednesday (March 19, 1997) at Stanly Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 10, 1918, in Stanly County, Mrs. Almond was a daughter of the late Oscar Albert Furr and Sarah Ann Lambert Furr Hatley. A homemaker, she was a member of Canton Baptist Church. Her husband, Carroll Howell Almond, and son, Billy Almond, preceded her in death. Survivors include daughters Debbie Hatley and Janette Thompson, Albemarle; sisters Selma Tucker, Abbeville, S.C., and Evelyn “Jackie” Johnson, Rose Hill; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Canton Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Les Schofield, pastor, and the Rev. Gary Hunsucker. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery. Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Canton Road.
