Death
Arleene Furr Mangum of Austin died Tuesday afternoon at a local hospital. She was born in Mississippi, on May 30, 1898; the daughter of John and Jennie Girault Furr. She moved to Austin in 1936; and she and her family were longtime residents of Westlake Hills. She most recently was a resident of Retirement and Nursing Center of Austin. Mrs. Mangum was a teacher at Summit School, retiring in the mid 1960s. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Austin, where she taught Sunday school for 35 years. The class has been named the Arleene Mangum Class in her honor. She was predeceased by her husband, P.S. Mangum, in 1973; and her daughter, Dorothy Mangum Caffey and her husband, Howard Caffey. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Frank Brown of Richardson; and her sister, Frances Furr Anderson of Jackson, Mississippi. Her grandsons and their wives are: Frank and Janice Brown of Austin, Ted and Mary Piland of Northport, Alabama, Page and Pat Piland of Houston, David and Linda Caffey of Rowland Heights, California, John and Etta Caffey of Cedar Hill, Texas. Her granddaughters and their husbands are: Susanne and Dr, Peter Fagan, and Margaret and Bill Millikin, all of Amarillo. She is also survived by 16 great- grandchildren. Funeral services, 2:00 PM, Thursday, Weed-Corley Funeral Home, with Reverend Don Searles and Reverend Tom Martin officiating. Interment, Capital Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Arleene Mangum Sunday School Class. Memorial gifts to the First Baptist Church or the charity of choice.
