Sidney Thomas FURR
(13 Mar 1932 - 27 Feb 2000)
“I've been shot at twice — and last night they got me,” said Patrolman Sidney T. Furr from his Baptist Hospital bed. “We knew the gunmen were in the motel, Crescent Lake Motel at 5110 Summer. I knocked on the door. It was about 8:30. “Officers stood against the wall on either side of me, out of sight. “A woman opened the door and I said, ‘Is your husband here?” “She stepped back and he was standing there, with a .32 aimed at me. ‘Come inside,’ he said so soft that the two officers, flanking me couldn't hear him. He stood back in the room a few steps. “He said, ‘You heard what I told you. Come in here.’ “I was trying to figure out how to tell the officers he had a gun on me. Then I lunged to the right, grabbing across my body for the pistol on my left hip. (Furr is right-handed. He likes a cross-draw from the left hip.) “It felt like a sledge hammer hit my left arm, with a big electric shock. I knew I was hit." A pop bottle sat on the in widow sill of the hospital room. “I started to drink that last night when they gave me a knockout pill,” said Furr, smiling. “I went out before I could finish drinking it.” The gunman's bullet entered Furr's left arm, below the elbow, and came out just above the wrist. “It was superficial,” said Furr. “I'm lucky.”
