purchased by Samuel Rust, father of said Benjamin and Jeremiah. On the next
day, Benjamin conveyed to John Rust (probably his son), for 3,000 lbs. tob-
acco 100 acres of the same tract (D&W, vol VII, p. 235, Westmoreland Co;
Book RUST OF VIRGINIA)

His will, Feb 19, 1754, was proven Apr 1, 1754; married (1) by Nov 2, 1720, Mrs. Eleanor (Branham) GREENE, widow of RICHARD GREENE, born Feb 19, 1702, died Nov 10, 1722, daughter of Richard and Anne (Greene) Branham, who married (2) John Branham, Nov 1714; married (2) Sarah Metcalfe, died probably before her husband, daughter of Richard and Anne (O) Metcalfe.--North Farnham (Va.) ***BUYING A WIFE, COLONIA STYLE...The Deposition of Mrs. Winifred FREEAR wife of Mr. Richard FREEAR of Halifax Town in the Province of North Carolina taken by Virtue of the Commission &c hereunto annexed:
This Deponent being first sworn on the holy evangelists of Almighty God Deposeth and saith that about fifteen years ago she was living at the House of Miss Hannah RUST daughter of Mr. Benjamin RUST in Richmond County in VA, that about that time Samuel RUST son of Peter RUST and several other Gentlemene were making their address and Proposals for marrying the said Hannah; that the said Peter seemed to this Deponent verry desirous that his said son Samuel should meet with success in his addresses to the said Hannah that he inquired of this Deponent what could be the reason that the said Samuel and Hannah was not married saying Perhaps Hannah did not think him fortune enough, after which he the said Peter said that he could not make his son's fortune equal to that of Spencer BALL who was son of Colonel Spencer BALL of Northumberland county and was about that time paying his addresses to the said Hannah and that the said Peter added that a Plantation known by the name of BILLY MOORE'S PLANTATION in Westmoreland county, was already the said Samuel's and that he was ready to Execute and Absolute Deed for the same and had requested he would Sign, and that he intended to give the said Samuel all his lands at his Decease, and that he the said Peter Declared that he would give to the said Samuel either Nine Negroe Slaves on the Day of his Marriage and other ten Negroe Slaves at his the said Peter's decease or ten at his Marriage and nine at his decease, and this Deponent further sayth that she thinks she then mentioned to the said Peter that the said Hannah was uneasy on Account of the Debts owning from the Estate of her father, to which the said Peter Replied that the said Debtws should not hurt her and this Deponent further saith that she Believes the said Peter told her that he the said Peter would build a house for the said Hannah to her liking either on Moore's Plantation before mentioned or on the land on which the said Hannah lived in Richmond countyas she the said Hannah sould Prefer. On being interrogated whether these Promises were made before the intermarriage of the said Samuel and Hannah, this Deponent replied that all these things Passes several Months before the intermarriage. On being asked with what View or intention the said Peter communicated there things to her, and whether they were of any use or Effect, this Deponent an (swere)d that there was no Doubt that he Expected she would inform the said Hannah of the same that she mentioned the matters to the said Hannah before their intermarriage but does not know how far the said Hannah might be influenced thereby but believes they operate in favour of the said Samuel and further saith that she was them married, and further this Deponent saith not
