Notes
Death
The funeral for Bobby Gene Furr, a member of the Stanfield Town Council, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church of Stanfield. Furr, a former member and chairman of the Stanly County Board of Elections and the Stanly County Board of Education, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Stanly Memorial Hospital. He was 65. Furr was elected to the board of education in 1970, according to Jane Rogers, administrative assistant to Superintendent Dr. Gene Moore, and was elected chairman in 1974, serving in that office until 1980. He went off the board in 1985, Rogers said. Furr also served eight years on the Stanly County Board of Elections, being chairman all eight years, according to Jewell Simpson, director of elections, who said, “He was one of the finest men I have ever worked with.” Stanfield Mayor Mark Alberghini said Furr was elected to the board in the last election and prior to that served on the town’s planning and zoning board. “The passing of Bob Furr is a tremendous loss not only to our community, but to all of Stanly County. His many contributions and years of faithful service to his church, his family and his community will be missed by all. He was a man of impeccable integrity and strong inner work standards. His diplomacy and skills of persuasion were the glue that held our board together.” Elbert L. “Whit” Whitley, chairman of the board of trustees of Stanly Community College, of which Furr was also a member, said, “Bob was a tremendous asset to the Board of Stanly Community College. He was a very dedicated member and truly supportive of the college over the years in which he served. Bob has been very much involved in the college and served on the search committee for two presidents of the college. He was one of our stronger members and really did a fine job. We are going to miss him. He was a strong influence on the board.” Owner and operator of American Overhead Doors of Stanfield, formerly of Charlotte, Furr started the business in Charlotte in 1954 and had continued to be a leader in the Overdoor Industries of the Carolinas. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanfield where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher, a member of Oasis Shrine Temple of Charlotte, and a charter member of the Stanfield Lions Club. Born in Stanly County Jan. 26, 1931, he was a son of the late Rufus Nathanial Furr and the late Alta Little Furr Hathcock. He is survived by his wife, Jackie Morgan Furr of the home; two sons, Bobby Gene Furr, Jr., and Mike Furr, both of Charlotte; a daughter, Pamela Kleinman of Long Island, N.Y.; a brother, Glenn Furr of Stanfield; a sister, Shirley Morgan of Kannapolis; and three grandchildren. The Rev. Terry Seamon will conduct the funeral and burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland from 7 to 9 tonight.
