Death
Helena Furr KeziahBeloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Friend MONROE -- Mrs. Keziah, age 89, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at 10:30 PM. She had been a resident of Hospice of Union County for the past three weeks. A native of Union County, she was born April 15, 1916 to the late Silas and Ida Foard Furr. After the death of her natural father, her mother married the late Isom Plyer of Monroe. Helena was married to the late Steve Taylor and later to the late Shirley Keziah, both of Monroe. Helena was a member of Living Way Foursquare Church of Indian Trail, NC for many years. She was owner-operator of Eastside Florist, Monroe, for 58 years, where she was known by many friends and customers as always giving a kind word with genuine love for all. She also worked with alcoholics for many years, thus establishing the first AA Chapter with the christening of Friendship Home of Monroe, located on Maurice Street. Survivors include one son, David R. Taylor of Monroe; two daughters, Mariam K. Collins of Waxhaw and Carol K. Berkebile of Monroe; four granddaughters, Martha T. Cotton of Charlotte, Melinda Taylor of Amarillo, TX, Jeannie M. Humbles of Marshville, NC, and Lori C. Dalton of Huntersville; four grandsons, Tony Taylor of Amarillo, TX, Darryl Collins of Charlotte, NC, David Collins of Waxhaw, NC and Scott Berkebile of Monroe; 14 great grandchildren; two brothers, Former State Senator Aaron Plyler, Sr. and I. F. Plyler, Jr., both of Monroe. Helena was preceded in death by three sisters, Clara Elliott of Atlanta, GA, Mildred Dove of Kannapolis, NC and Elizabeth Mattox of Charlotte, NC; and two brothers, Wilburn Furr of Charlotte, NC and Ralph Furr of Chico, CA. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 29, at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be sent to Hospice of Union County, 700 West Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110. Published in the Charlotte Observer on 10/16/2005.
