Death
Chesapeake - Virginia Ferguson Gibson, 89 passed away in her sleep on Friday, January 2nd 2015, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Born Cora Virginia Ferguson on January 19th, 1925 in Mecklenburg County, NC, she is the daughter of the late Isaac Otto Ferguson and Ora Pauline Furr. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Nathaniel Gerald Ferguson, Lowell Mason Ferguson, and Boyd White and also by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Richard Borden Gibson, who she met while she was a USO volunteer during World War II. Mrs. Gibson lived in Midland and Concord, NC until graduating from Cabarrus County Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. Additionally, she received a Bachelor's degree from George Peabody College for Teachers/Vanderbilt University in Nashville TN in 1956 and a Master's degree in Nursing from Simmons College in Boston MA in 1958. She worked as a registered nurse in both North Carolina and New York and as a Montessori school teacher in New York. Mrs. Gibson is survived by her daughter Virginia Stalvey and her son in-law Tom Stalvey of Chesapeake VA, and 3 brothers, Ike and Joe Ferguson of Stanfield NC, and Lane Ferguson of Mountain Rest SC. The family will receive friends at Wilkinson Funeral Home, Concord, NC from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m., on Saturday, January 10, and a graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, 461 Church St. N, Concord, NC. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in the memory of Virginia F. Gibson to Susan G. Komen for the Cure , P. O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309. Local arrangements are by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel.Endnotes
