Death
The owner of Powder Springs’ only grocery store through the 1970s, Elsie Cole Furr, 95, died at her home Tuesday of kidney failure. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Powder Springs First Baptist Church. Bellamy’s Powder Springs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Furr and her late husband, Grady Furr, owned Furr Grocery from 1943 until they retired in 1970, according to her daughter- in-law, Glenda Furr of Powder Springs. Mrs. Furr’s son, the late Frank Furr, was mayor of Powder Springs when he was 25. Another son, Lewis Furr, Glenda Furr’s husband, is a former city councilman. Survivors other than her son are her sister, Florence Garrett of Atlanta; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta, Georgia, July 17, 1997
