Death
Carolyn Pitts Furr, 90, died on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury. She had been in declining health for a year, and seriously ill for a week. Born in Salisbury on Feb. 19, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Thornwell G. and Emma Pitts Furr. She was educated in the Salisbury city school system, and went on to receive a music degree from Salem College in 1947. She was an accomplished pianist, and spent many years composing, transcribing, editing, and engraving music. She worked closely with N.C. Symphony Conductor Lamar Stringfield in writing various outdoor dramas and other works celebrating the roots of American music. She also taught piano to many students, and developed a program to teach music to children. She later had a career with the Rowan County Department of Social Services, retiring from there in 1986. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, T. G. Furr, Jr., in 1935; and a sister, Frances Furr Cooke of Taylorsville, in 1994. She is survived by one nephew, Davis Cooke, and husband Mark Bias of Salisbury. The family would like to express deepest gratitude to the team at Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care. Thanks to the steadfast, loving care of these dedicated and skilled professionals, Carolyn was able to live out her last year with the dignity and independence she so earnestly desired. Visitation: Friday, Sept. 29, from 6-8 p.m., at the family home, 210 S. Jackson St. in Salisbury. Service: A service for the Burial of the Dead will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, followed by Committal at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care. Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Furr family.Endnotes
