Death
Tuesday, September 4, 2007 — Roy Andrew Huneycutt, 90, of Locust died Sept. 1, 2007. Roy was born Aug. 26, 1917, the fifth child of Millard Filmore Huneycutt and Nancy Frances Furr Huneycutt. He was a life-long resident of Locust — by birth and by choice. Roy was predeceased by his wife of almost 65 years, Minnie Lee Hathcock Huneycutt. Roy was a graduate of Stanfield High School, class of 1936. After graduation, Roy worked in a grocery store at the crossoads in Locust until he enlisted in the Army for service in WWII in the Philippine Islands. Back home after the war, he purchased (in 1945) half interest in A.J. Furr Lumber Company in Locust. In 1955, he purchased total interest and was then sole owner of the business now known as Locust Lumber Company. While the lumber business was his prime occupation, Mr. Huneycuttt was active in many other areas of service and community life. He as an active member of Locust Baptist Church (since the age of 13). He is a former deacon, member of the building committee, and completed approximately 40 years as teacher of the Adult Men’s Bible Class. He was a charter member of The Locust Lions Club and held most of the major offices in the club. He was a member of the West Stanly High School Committee during the inaugural years of West Stanly High School. Mr., Huneycutt was elected to the Stanly County Board of Commissioners and served from 1962 through 1966. During the tenure of that group of County Commissioners, the five men on the board waived their salaries and instead had scholarship funds established for Stanly County students at Pfeiffer and Wingate universities. Mr. Huneycutt served on the Board of Directors of the Locust Branch of Piedmont Bank starting in 1960. In 1968, he was appointed to the Board of Directors for the entire Piedmont Corpora-tion and served in that capacity for 13 years from 1968 to 1981. During that time, Mr. Huneycutt was also appointed by then-Governor James Holshouser to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. He served on the Wildlife Commission for six years — from 1973 until 1979.Endnotes
