Death
OAKBORO -- Mr. William Ray Rogers died peacefully on September 6, 2005 in Stanly Manor, Albemarle, NC. He was born June 13, 1908 in Albemarle. He was the son of Benjamin Marshall Rogers and Emma Lorena Furr Rogers, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Jewell Hartsell Rogers. Mr. Rogers is survived by one daughter, Lyna Jewell Rogers of Carrboro, NC. Other surviving family members are brothers, John P. Rogers of Oakboro, NC, and Robert L. Rogers of Statesville, NC; sisters-in-law, Nellie W. Church of Oakboro, NC and Jane Hartsell Miller of Marion, NC; nephews, Arthur H. Rogers, Jr. and Marshall C. Rogers of Albemarle, NC, Ben Rogers of Oakboro, NC, David H. Miller of Asheville, NC, David A. Hartsell, Jr. of Lexington, NC; nieces, Barbara Rogers Padgett of Atlanta, GA, Trudy Rogers Evans of BirminghamL, Paula Rogers Shedd of Charlotte, NC, Millie Rogers Cauthen of Metairie, LA, Debbie Rogers Edwards of Oakboro, NC, Cheryl Rogers Efird of Norwood, NC, Nancy McLeod Carpenter, Peggy G. Crowell and Virginia A. Turbyfill of Albemarle, NC, Dawn L. Goodman of Oakboro, NC, Lynn B. Blankenship of Richmond, VA, and Rosejean Thomas of Phoenix, AZ. Mr. Rogers graduated high school at Sylva Collegiate Institute in Sylva, NC. He graduated with honors from NC State University in 1931 with a B.S. in Textiles. Mr. Rogers spent his life in the textile industry holding positions in management and personnel with Burlington Industries and Stanly Knitting Mills, among others. He was an avid genealogist, and wrote several books on his Rogers ancestors and their roles in the Civil War. He served as a member of the Oakboro Town Board for several years and was instrumental in securing the water system and treatment plant for Oakboro. He was a member of many civic organizations during his lifetime including Lions Club, Rotary and Kiwanis. He was a member of Oakboro United Methodist Church. He was an avid supporter of NCSU and a lifelong member of the Wolfpack Club. Visitation will be at Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle, Wednesday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, September 8, 2005 at 10:30 AM at Oakboro Cemetery, followed by the Memorial service at 11:00 AM at Oakboro United Methodist Church. Officiating the service will be Reverend Donnie L. Jones, and Reverend Anthony Moore. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stanly County Public Library, 133 E. Main Street, Albemarle, NC; or to Oakboro United Methodist Church, 405 N. Main Street, Oakboro, NC 28129.
