Helen Suzanne FURR
(13 Nov 1926 - 2 Dec 2015)
Suzanne Furr Ressler, of Brawley, Calif., formerly of the Daily Item editorial staff, won six of the awards presented for 1954 when the California Association of Press Women conducted its annual luncheon aSturday (sic) in Glendale. Mrs. Ressler, who was associated with the Daily Item here during years between her graduation from Sunbury high school in 1944 and transfer of her residence from this city to Brawley in 1951, is a member of the editorial staff of the Brawley News, for which she conducts a Woman’s Page daily, writes a column “The Way of Women,” and on several occasions has had complete charge of editing issues of the News. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Furr, HideAway Farm, Selinsgrove, R. D. 1. Two first prizes were won by Mrs. Ressler in the small dailies classification: For general excellence in the women’s department and for a newspaper edited by a woman. In addition, Mrs. Ressler was awarded second place for a news story, second place for a column, second place for an interview, and third place for a special article. The interview referred to was one obtained by her last summer with Clark Gable and Gary Cooper, famous film stars, who were stopping at a Brawley motel enroute to a dove hunting expedition in the Imperial Valley of California. Mrs. Ressler and staff photographer, at first given tentative consent to an interview when convenient, cooled their heels in an adjacent store for several hours until the film personages appeared and rewarded patience and persistence with a lengthy chat, with Mrs. Ressler, and posed for pictures. Mrs. Ressler is the wife of Chester P. Ressler, son of Mrs. Hattie Ressler, 420 North Fifth street, this city, and is the mother of two children, Carole Jean, 7, and Charles, “Chucky,” 4. The family resides at 441 I street in Brawley. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Furr plan to leave Saturday, March 5, for California, to spend a vacation with their daughter and family in Brawley. Mrs. Furr is a member of the editorial staff of the Daily Item.
