1-1 WHEREAS, Colonel William R. "Randy" Furr of Pflugerville has
1-2 rendered outstanding service as an officer in the Texas Army
1-3 National Guard, a force of citizen-soldiers who play a crucial role
1-4 in preserving public safety, advancing the community welfare, and
1-5 defending our nation's security; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Born December 15, 1947, in Austin, Colonel Furr
1-7 graduated from Lanier High School and in 1987 earned a bachelor of
1-8 science degree, summa cum laude, through the Military Resident
1-9 Center System of Park College, with a double major in social
1-10 psychology and management of human resources; in 1992 he received a
1-11 master of education degree in counseling and guidance from
1-12 Southwest Texas State University, where his academic record earned
1-13 him induction into the Psi Chi National Honor Society; and
1-14 WHEREAS, His military education includes Ordnance Officer
1-15 Basic and Ordnance Officer Advanced, distance learning offered by
1-16 the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the
1-17 U.S. Air Force War College, and many technical schools; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Colonel Furr enlisted as a private in the 122nd Car
1-19 Company, Texas Army National Guard, in 1968, and received his
1-20 commission from the state officer candidate program in 1971; he has
1-21 risen steadily through the ranks and held numerous assignments with
1-22 the 49th Armored Division and with the State Area Command; in
1-23 August 2000 he was appointed director of logistics, Headquarters
1-24 State Area Command, and in this capacity has served as advisor to
2-1 the adjutant general and command staff concerning all Army National
2-2 Guard logistical issues; and
2-3 WHEREAS, A man of wide-ranging abilities and interests,
2-4 Colonel Furr has pursued avocations as diverse as historical study,
2-5 woodworking, classic boats, underwater archeology, and technical
2-6 scuba diving; his family includes 2 sons, 3 daughters, and 12
2-7 grandchildren; and
2-8 WHEREAS, Throughout a career distinguished by exemplary
2-9 leadership, seasoned judgment, and consummate professionalism,
2-10 Colonel Furr has set the highest standards of excellence in the
2-11 execution of his duties and earned the respect and esteem of
2-12 countless friends and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-14 Legislature hereby commend Colonel William R. "Randy" Furr for his
2-15 meritorious record of service with the Texas Army National Guard
2-16 and express its profound gratitude for his deep devotion to his
2-17 country and to the cause of freedom; and, be it further
2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-19 prepared for Colonel Furr as an expression of highest regard by the
2-20 Texas House of Representatives.

Death
Colonel William “Randy” Furr, age 53, of Pflugerville, Texas, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2001, surrounded by his family and special friends. Colonel Furr concluded an illustrious career of 33 years in the Texas Army National Guard at Camp Mabry, Texas. Throughout his career, he has been a beacon of honor for the State of Texas and for the United States Army. Colonel Furr’s superior honors, decorations, awards and citations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Lone Star Distinguished Service Medal, Master Parachute Badge and numerous others. In 1992, Colonel Furr graduated Suma Cum Laude with a Masters of Education from Southwest Texas State University. He also had an extensive military education that began in 1968. His highest honor and reward was his family life. He will be missed and cherished by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Renfro; his children and spouses, daughter, Sharon Ragsdale; son, Reece Blincoe and wife Mary; son, Zane Furr and wife Carol; daughter, Suzanne Kern and husband Toby; his sisters and their spouses, Judy Talley and husband Wayne, Jan Blissit and husband “Mickey”, Debbie Dragoo and husband Arlin, Lizanne Starr and husband Preston; and his life long friend and companion, Ms. Vicky Laine. Colonel Furr embraced the lives of his many adored grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and numerous other family members and friends. His father, Raymond O. Furr and his mother, Bettye Furr, preceded his in death, both of Austin, Texas. Randy had a compassion for living life to the Extreme. He raced fast cars and faster boats, jumped out of airplanes and was an avid scuba diver. He was the cofounder of the Undersea Heritage and Exploration Society. His Extreme Buddies will miss him greatly. “AIRBORNE!” Funeral services will be held Monday, May 21, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Interment will follow immediately with Full Military Honors at Austin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Undersea Heritage and Exploration Society or the Military History Museum at Camp Mabry.Austin American-Statesman, Austin, Texas, May 21, 2001
