George Henry FURR

(26 Oct 1888 - 19 Jan 1957)

George Henry Furr married Dessie Lee Burleyson January 11, 1911 in Fort Mills, SC. She was the daughter of Rowan and Catharine Lentz Burleyson. They were living in Cabarrus County in 1913 where their first daughter, Lillie Mae, was born. The year 1915 found them living in Rock Hill, SC where their second daughter, Mary Lee, was born. They soon moved to Albemarle, NC with George running a cafe while Dessie worked in the cotton mill. They moved back to Rock Hill where Mary Lee died of spinal meningitis on Feb. 1, 1916. George had very little formal education but was always good with figures. He could always find a job and make a living. In 1918 they lived in Chester, SC where he drove a taxi cab. Later that same year they moved to Wadesboro, NC where he lived and worked on the Hightower Farm. He later moved to the Gateward Farm and worked as a two horse tenant farmer. The Gateward family furnished them a house. It was at that time George and Dessie adopted an eleven year old boy, Lewis Alexander Sweat, to help with the farm chores. The Gateward family had used slaves in the past and when they were freed, one named Tom, stayed with them and continued to work on the farm. Miss Nanny Gateward was Lillie's first grade teacher. In 1923 the family was living in Concord, NC and working in the cotton mill. By 1924 George was running a gas station and grocery store in Midway, between Concord and Kannapolis, with a few slot machines on the side. 1926 found the family living west of Kannapolis in an area called Frog Hollow. They worked for Cannon Mills in No. 1 spinning room. The next year George moved his family to a house just off highway 29 north of Winecoff School. Lillie began to date Wade Linebarrier and they were married in August 1927. George and Dessie stayed there until they bought a house on Gold Street in Concord around 1930. They both worked in the cotton mill that was only 500 yards from the house. His back yard extended about 200 feet in the rear where he gardened, grew fruit trees, and had a large chicken house where he kept White Leghorn hens for laying. In 1939 he quit the mill and built a small grocery store in his front yard while Dessie continued to work on second shift. It was during the time he operated the store that his brother, Kether, came to see him. After a time of drinking a fight broke out and Kether pulled a knife on George and tried to kill him. Kether and his two sons were in trouble with the law quit often and spent time in prison at Raleigh. George operated the store and made a good living from it till a mysterious fire occurred one morning in 1943 . He had a fire sale and reopened it again later after the remodeling was done. He sold the house and store in 1944 and moved to Kannapolis where he and Dessie worked for Cannon Mills. In 1948 he bought a house on Crowell Ave. in west Albemarle. They both worked in Cabarrus Mill and he tended a good size garden. Sometime in 1953 they moved back to NW Concord in a house owned by his old friend Brant Means. He retired from public work but boot-legged beer and whiskey from his home. He lived his last years there and died January 16, 1957. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Albemarle.
