Tirck MATTHYSSEN
(16 Dec 1682 - 18 Jun 1742)
Biography
Tirck Matthysen (as it is spelled in the baptismal register) was born 16 December 1682 in Kingston, Ulster County, Province of New York [1] and baptized there at the Reformed Dutch Church on 24 December. His parents' names were spelled as Mattys Matysz and Tajatie Wit. Jan Tyse, Magdaleen BlanJean and Cornelis Switz were his baptismal sponsors. [2]
He was named for his maternal grandfather, Tjerk Claesen DeWitt. Jan Tysen (also spelled as Jan Matthyssen) was his paternal uncle.
On 1 February 1702 (NS) Tjerk married Marytje ten Eyck at the Reformed Dutch Church in Kingston. Banns had been published but the dates are not given. The record states that he was born and was living in "Kingstouwn" and she was born and was living in "Horle", presumably Kingston and Hurley, respectively, in Ulster County, Province of New York.[3]
Tjerk appears on the 1709 tax list of Kingston. [4]
In 1711, he purchased from Hendrick Van Wye a home that still stands at 138 Green Street (the intersection of Green and John Streets). The house was and is a short walk from the church (although the church has been moved from its original location). His brother Matthys lived a few hundred feet away. The house was set afire by the British during the Battle of Kingston on 16 Oct 1776, but rebuilt by Tjerk's grandson Garret. [5]
1713 . . . (page 290). Capt. Mattys Mattysen of corporated Kingston, for 97 pounds, 12 schepels sells to Tjerck Mattysen of Town of Kingston, woodland in Corporation Kingston, south of Queen's highway, opposite to the other land of grantor. (Surve y) . . . bounded east, south and west by commons and north by queen's highway, cont. 20 acres. Likewise small piece of lowland on south side of Esopus Kill, on west end of land of grantor in Kingston . . . cont. 6 acres. Also 2 acres low lan d on south east side of last 6 acres (description). Signed 02 April 1713, Mattys Mattisen (mark). Wits: Teunis Tappen, W. Nottingham. Evert Wynkoop, Justice Peace. [6]
The shift to using the surname "Van Keuren" occurred about 1715 by agreement among Tjerk and his brothers. [7]
Tjerk, apparently, was a leader in the community. He served eleven terms as Town Trustee and/or Town Supervisor and was selected three times to perform "magisterial duties." When the church was chartered he was a member of the original board of deacons. [8] [9] Tjerk served in the Ulster Foot Regiment, first as an Ensign, then as a Captain. [10] [11] The militia would have dealt principally with disputes involving native American clashes with colonials.
In his will dated 27 May 1742, Dirck mentions his wife Maritie, son Matthew, son Benjamin, daughter Sarah wife of William Van Vliet, sons Abraham and Jacobus, daughter Janeke wife of Dirck Westbrook, daughter Katie wife of Joseph Du Bois, daughter Catharine wife of Arnold Vielen, daughter Maritie wife of Petrus Louw, daughter Rachel wife of Dirck Van Vliet, daughters Elisabeth and Lydia. The will was proved 22 Sep 1742. The home in Kingston, as well as the farm and orchard was bequeathed to son Abraham. The land in Dutchess County was left to sons Matthew and Benjamin, and daughter Sarah. [12]
Tjerck died in Kingston, 18 June 1742, survived by his wife. [13]
Tjerk and Marytje had thirteen children, verified by near-primary records:

A secondary source lists a fourteenth child:
1709 Dec 26 Catharina.[27] (This date falls into an anomalous period in the church records where dozens of baptisms appear to have been entered months after the fact, all with the same date, raising the possibility that some could have been omitted.)

Notes
Property
The home was just a few hundred feet from the home of brother Matthys and about two blocks from the Dutch Reformed Church. Later Charles Van Keuren purchased a home about one block away at the corner of Crown and John.Tjerk's house passed to son Abraham after Tjerk's death.
Shortly after Abraham's death, 12 Oct. 1776, the house and several neighboring ones had severe damage from a fire.
During the Battle of Kingston, 16 Oct. 1777, the house was set afire by the British. Abraham's son Garret restored the house.
Alt name
Name change due to family's adoption of a surname rather than using patronymics; also an anglicized spelling of Tjerk.Endnotes
