Zeletie LA METRE
(21 Jul 1706 - Aft 10 Feb 1777)
Was she a twin?
Occasionally, one comes across a claim that her name was "Tebina" Zeletie La Metre but I've found no records to support that claim. Riker [1] writes this:
"Cornelius (11), (son of Jan), had issue:
45. Tebina, baptized July 21, 1706.
46. Zeletie, baptized August 4, 1706 ..."
Because it was the Dutch custom to baptize children within the first month or so, it would seem clear that Tebina and Zeletie were twins. One could explain the early baptism of Tebina on the grounds that she was sickly and not expected to survive. The absence of further records supports her early death.
However, an examination of the Kingston Church baptism records [2] do not reveal a baptism of Tebina, although another child was baptized that day. My tentative conclusion is that Riker wrote "baptized" when he should have written "born," leading me to conclude that both girls were born on 21 July and the only survivor, Zeletie, was baptized on August 4.
Biography
Zeletie La Metre (better known as Celetje or Seeletjen Delameeter) was born 21 July 1706 in Kingston, Ulster County, Province of New York, to Cornelis La Metre and Margariet van Steenberge. She was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church there on 4 August 1706. [3] [4] [5]
She married Mattheus Van Keuren in the same church on 26 Jan 1728/9 after publishing intentions on 5 January. [6]
About 1740, Mattheus inherited from his father, land on the other side of the Hudson River, in the Poughkeepsie Precinct of Dutchess County, Province of New York. There he built a home, a mill, and a forge.
Zeletie and Mattheus had seven children, with the first six born in Kingston and the last in Poughkeepsie:
Tjerk, bapt. 11 Jan 1729/30
Cornelius, bapt. 23 July 1732
Abraham, 20 Feb 1736/7
Margriet, 22 Apr 1739
Benjamin, 8 Nov 1741
Matheus, 30 Oct 1743
Marytje, after 1745
Zeletie was still living on 28 Nov 1760, when she was mentioned in her father's will, [7] and on 10 Feb 1777, when she was mentioned in her husband's will. [8]

Notes
Residence (family)
Quoted from cited book:"Near Matthew's home was a small shipping village that came to be known as Van Keurens New York. From there, big ships could dock and load/unload for the Poughkeepsie area. A ferry was also located there, linking Dutchess and Ulster Counties. The Village was also destroyed by the British in 1777."
