Notes
Birth
I believe that Ezra Brown and Israel Brown are the same person and was born on 18 Nov 1841 in Delaware. Here's how I account for the evidence:
- There are two records from Pohick church for Ezra/Ezria stating he was born 18 Nov 1831. Both dates probably come from a single source. I believe that both are off by exactly ten years because that is a frequent mistake when calculating a person's birth date from their age. I have even seen that error on official death certificates. I believe that the day and month of birth is correct as they have given it.
- The 1850 census lists an Israel Brown, but no Ezra Brown, with a calculated birth year of 1841. There are no subsequent records for his in Virginia.
- The 1860 census omits Israel but includes E. T. Brown. It says he is 9 years old, but he's listed in the wrong position, ahead of the person who is aged 16. I believe that this is a simple recording error by the enumerator. He should have been listed as age 19. It shows him as born in Delaware.
- The 1870 census lists him as 28 years old, which is consistent with the proposed birth date. It shows his birthplace as Virginia. We believe that is incorrect; it probably results from the enumerator making a summary notation.
- The 1880 census lists him as 39 years old, which is consistent with the proposed birth date. It shows him born in Delaware.
