Notes
Birth
1850 census says age 33, suggesting birth date of abt 18171860 census says age 45, suggesting birth date of abt 1815
Year and state are consistent with death record.
Various records suggest birth place of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. New Castle is located in a place where the three states are close together. Furthermore, that part of Delaware was once part of Pennsylvania. Finally, since New Castle on the river, it is conceivable that the community extended across the river to New Jersey.

In the fall of 1863, Henry P. Davis gave Gilman Brown the sum of twenty five (25) dollars to purchase groceries for him at Alexandria Va at which place Mr. Brown had a job[?] & was in the habit of obtaining necessaries[?] for his neighbors. On this occasion, after the goods were purchased, They were seized by the military authorities and [inserted: "of Mr. Brown & his own goods"] together with the horse & wagon were confiscated in consequence of taking more than he (Brown) had a permit for. In November 1865, Henry P. Davis solicited Brown to give him a note for the amount promising that it would never be "pushed" or any trouble given him (Brown) for the money but it could be paid in small amounts as he (Brown) could raise the money. On this note at two[?] several times Brown paid five dollars -- once five dollars to Henry P. Davis. The note was sometime in February last, given to Chas Arrundell[?] for collection, and to Chas, Brown paid another five dollars. In April a warrant was served on Brown to appear at Justices Court on Saturday April 20th to answer the claim. Mr. Brown sent word to Esq Rice who issued the summons that he could not be in attendance on that day. Of course, as custom has established the rule, the case would go over one month
[image 467]
in the absence of either party at first hearing or return. On last Saturday, as Mr. B buried his wife on Thursday I appeared for him and found and found that although Esq Rice had issued the summons judgment & execution was issued by Mr. Lee. When such summary proceedings was questioned and no notice given the defendant in time to move a new trail and ow the time was out of limitation. I found that Chas Arundell had interested himself in the collection of the claim, had quietly represented to Mr Lee that was all right and without[?] publically calling the case, at least in my hearing, [illegible] I was present and in the absence of either party, judgment was rendered by Mr Lee [underline begins] and this without even the knowledge of [illegible] Rice [underline ends] [illegible] pending justice. Here is an execution with all the attendant costs now against Brown, whose[?] only wealth consisting in two or three coins[?] his wife has left from which she was want to obtain milk & butter to support her children.
You know the condition of this family, as you have visited Brown premises - or hut. He is a northern man & this judgment has been rendered by a justice who publically has [illegible] that he would never do anything for a northern man. & at the insistence[?] of the constable who, if he has not brought the claim had sent word by
[image 468]
Henry Marshall that he, Arundell, would pay Mr. Davis within[?] five dollars of the face of the claim.
The case is submitted to you for your action and I consider it a [illegible] outrage upon a poor destitute Union man.
Most respectfully
Your Obd Servant
J.[?] N.[?] Painter
Painters[?] Va, 5/20th 1864
P.S. I would also add here that the collection of the claim could not be effected by law as owing to the circumstances it is not a just claim -- but ten dollars has been paid when Brown had not had not bread for his children by misrepresentation--and the issuing of the execution of entirely illegal as will be Seen by reference to the "act to stay the collection of debts" passed March 2d 1866. Yet under this execution Mr Arundell is endeavoring to force[?] the claim.
Marriage
The obituary of James Dawson refutes the claim that the Susan Wiley who married Gilman Brown in 1868 had a prior husband named James Dorson/Dawson.Conway Springs (Northfield, Kansas) Star

The FamilySearch record and its derivative on Ancestry give the date of death as 3 August. However, the microfilm image of the "Register of Deaths" indicates that death occurred on 13 August. I will assume a death date of 13 August, keeping in mind that there may be a source more original than the "Death Register" that might give a different date.Death
I am choosing 13 August as the correct date because it appears in the state "Register of Deaths". However, the index records for that image state 3 August. See the sources of the 3 August date to see the image that says 13 August.Religion
