Benoni DELANO

(30 Oct 1667 - 5 Apr 1738)

According to the Delano genealogy, Benoni was born, probably in Duxbury, on 30 October 1667. However, this is precisely the date when his parents were facing charges of fornication; the coincidence seems unlikely.

He played a part in a youthful rebellion. According to Mayflower Descendants, Alden, p 148, “the young men” of Duxbury petitioned the town meeting of Feb 1709/10 as a result of being excluded from the first division of land. They demanded a half share in the first division or a whole share in the second. The two agreed to include them in the second division, but Benoni was unsatisfied. He and Abram Samson, Jr, each demanded forty acres in the first division. It’s unclear how this claim was resolved.

He died at the age of 71 on 5 April 1738 and is buried in the South Duxbury Cemetery. He was then called “Dr Benoni”. Because drugs were found in his inventory, it’s possible that he acted as a physician. (Mayflower Descendants, Alden, p 148)
