Individual Details

Dorothy VAN KEUREN

(22 Apr 1919 - 23 Jul 2009)

Dorothy Van Keuren DePoy Lardner was born 22 April 1919 in the Cohoes Hospital, Cohoes, New York to William R. Van Keuren and his wife Edith Amelia “Amy” Richards, of Waterford, New York. She was christened about a month later at St. Barnabas Church, Troy, NY by the Rev. Holbrook.

After graduation from Waterford High School in 1936, she went on to attend and graduate, in 1941, from the Shipman School of Journalism in New York. She held a number of jobs including the Waterford correspondent for The Record Newspapers of Troy; the continuity director for WTRY in Troy; and a correspondent in the sales and engineering department of Montgomery Ward.

On 2 November 1943, Dorothy’s parents announced her engagement to Corporal Robert DePoy of the U. S. Army, stationed at Camp Murphy in West Palm Beach, Florida. The DePoy family had lived in Troy until moving to Saint Petersburg, Florida. Corp. DePoy had graduated from Troy High School and the Midland Radio School, Kansas City, Missouri and had worked for General Electric before joining the Army. They were married 14 November 1943 in Saint Petersburg and then moved to West Palm Beach. Two weeks later, the family learned that DePoy had been killed in a train accident.

Possibly as a result of working at WTRY, Dorothy met Walter C. Lardner. They were married on 28 July 1946, at Grace Church in Waterford, after he returned from his Army service in Europe as a radio operator and, as one of the “Monuments Men.” He was ordained as an Episcopal priest, 11 December 1954 at the Grace Episcopal Church in Waterford and became the vicar of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Elizabethtown, New York.

In 1960, the family moved to Hudson Falls, New York, where Father Lardner became the rector of Zion Episcopal Church. Dorothy wrote for several local newspapers, notably a weekly column “Hearthside” for the Moreau Sun. She also served for ten years as the secretary of the Hudson Falls-Kingsbury Chamber of Commerce.

Dorothy and Walter had three daughters: Barbara, 1947; Wendy, 1949; and June, 1956.

Dorothy died on 23 July 2009 at the Glens Falls (NY) Hospital, after a period of residence at the Fort Hudson Nursing Home in Fort Edward, NY. Community-minded to the end, she donated her body to the Albany (NY) Medical College. Her cremated remains are interred, in a cookie jar, as she would have preferred, at the Waterford Rural Cemetery.
