I selected this date as primary because various sources suggest it. Other sources, though, suggest 1 May 1878. The decisive factor is the invoice for the headstone that he himself ordered, which states a birth year of 1877.Agrees with Social Security

The Mason source says that he was made a Mason on 2 November 1903. It goes on to say that he was the organist for 48 continuous years, but that the Lodge did not yet have an organ when he was made a member. The report is covers the period of 1855-1955. We know from other sources that he was still the organist in 1955, so the 48 years must extend to 1955. So we infer that he was the organist from 1907 onward.Marriage

He was one of the oldest members of the Phoenix Chapter, R.A.M. He had been a mason for 48 years and was chapter organist and music director for much of his membership."R.A.M" probably stands for "Royal Arch Masonry" which is described as follows:
The Royal Arch is the continuation of Craft Freemasonry. Its members, called Companions, meet in Chapters under a Grand Chapter. ...
"In England, the Royal Arch is considered to be the completion of "pure ancient Masonry". In the Craft the candidate is presented with a series of eminently practical principles and tenets which if he practises them he may hope to live a life pleasing to his God, however he worships him, and of service to his fellow man. But man is not simply a practical being, he has an essential spiritual aspect to his nature. That spiritual aspect is introduced in the Third Degree, in which the candidate is led to a contemplation of man's inevitable destiny, and becomes the central message of the Royal Arch. In that sense, "pure ancient Masonry" can be seen as a journey of self - knowledge and discovery with the Royal Arch completing the practical lessons of the Craft by a contemplation of man's spiritual nature, not replacing but reinforcing and supporting what he has learned from his religion."
