Richard E Doughty enlisted as a Private from Trempealeau, Wisconsin on Nov 23, 1863 in Company C, 30th Wisconsin Infantry and served during the remainder of the Civil War. Mustered out 20 Sep 1865, Louisville, KY.
This unit had an interesting and rather unusual history: it was kept in Wisconsin for its first six months to help guard against Indian uprisings and police the draft, then were sent into the Dakota Territory on Sully's Northwest Indian Expedition of 1863-4 during which they built and garrisoned Fort Rice, and finally sent to Kentucky to serve on provost duty guarding POWs at the military prison in Louisville.
PVT Doughty would have joined the regiment after they returned from the Dakota Territory. He mustered out with the unit on Sep 20, 1865. My gg-grandfather, PVT Henry Procter, served with PVT Richard Doughty in Co C, 30th WI Infantry.
