Cornelius Dabney

Baptized 11 Dec 1630 or 1631.

Cornelius was married twice. Edith was alive when she was mentioned in a letter written by Cornelius Dabney to his superior, Col. Francis Moryson of the Royal Commission to Virginia, and Susannah. The four children who were legatees to the land in the Pamunkey Neck may have been children of the first wife.

CAVALIERS & PIONEERS: Vol II, p.31 Cornelious Dabony was granted 300 acres in New Kent Co on the South side of the Yorke River, above Totopotomoyes Creek beginning at the mouth of same on 16 Mar 1667\8. 200 acres granted to him on 27 Sep 1664 and 100 acres due for transport of 2 persons.
p.77: Mr. John Fleming & Mr. Tho. Glass obtained a patent for 900 acres in New Kent Co on 27 Apr 1670 between Totopotomoyes & Matadequin Creeks, adjacent Charles Loving, Cornelius Dabany, Rob. Anderson, John Sexton, and Moses Davis. [Some of these gentlemen had agreements with the Pamunkey Indians]
p.237 20 Apr 1682 - Gawen Gawin patented 1000 acres in New Kent Co on the South side of the Totopottomoys Cr adj. Cornelius Dabney. The tract had been patented to John Davis on 27 Feb 1666 but deserted & granted sd Gawin.
p.282 21 Oct 1784 David Smith granted 650 acres in New Kent, South side of the York. Beginning at land he purchased of Mr. Cornelius Dabney adj John Fleming and John Sexton. 470 acres by former patent & the rest added for transport of 4 persons.

In ENGLISH DUPLICATES OF LOST VIRGINIA RECORDS; p.58: The Pamunkey Indians had leases with several individuals prior to 25 Apr 1679 and one of these included Cornelius Dabney, 600/700 acres of land. The Committee metting in Jun of 1699 named the persons claiming under the original leases and on p. 59: "James Dabney, Geo. Dabney, Dorothy Dabney & Sarah Dabney, devisees of Cornelius Dabney dec'd 700 acres to which is added of Low Land thereto adjoing 150 acres."

There is a Cornelius Dabney as one of the Churchwardens of St. Peter's Parish as named on the second page of the extant Vestry Book - 16 Nov 1685. He served as one of the processioners of the lands in 1689 and was vestryman from 1686 until his death prior to 1 May 1694 at which time Mr. William Clopton was voted to succeed him. The deaths of two of his children are recorded on p. 428: John, son to Cornelius Dabney deceased the 7th of Apr 1688 and Elizabeth, daughter, deceased the 4th of Apr 1688. There were recorded baptisms: Elizabeth, daughter of George Dabney was baptised 11 Nov 1698 and Welthan, daughter of James Dabney was baptised 8 Jan 1699.
