Three brothers, John, Cornelius, and George Dabney (D-Aubigne) left France after the Edict of Nantes (1598) and went to Wales. After they were well advanced in years, John and Cornelius with grown children, they emigrated to America. George settled in Massachusetts. John and Cornelius settled near Piping Tree Ferry on the York River in Hanover Co VA. Cornelius had a son George who also emigrated. He was first married to Mary Shrewsbury who died after coming to America. She was an invalid and Sarah Jennings her companion who emigrated with the family; Sarah then became the second wife of Cornelius after Mary died.

[The above may be an example of the "three brothers" story. There seems to be a confusion between generations as the elder Cornelius Dabney was granted land in VA as early in 1664; the younger Cornelius that married Sarah Jennings and named his wife as Sarah in his will, died just before his will was probated in Hanover Co in 1765 so he was surely born in VA. Also, the elder Cornelius was christened in 1631 so could not have been one of the three brothers that left France after 1598.]

The will of Cornelius Dabney states that his wife, Sarah Jennings Dabney, was the mother of nine children. Some files give a first wife as Edyth, but that's also suggested as the name of the first wife of his father - again, I believe the generations have been confused. It's also curious that there were only 4 heirs of the first Cornelius - James, George, Dorothy who married William Anderson, and Sarah - they were possibly the children of the first wife Edyth.

William Winston Dabney presented the will of Cornelius to the Hanover Clerk in 1868, to replace the copy destroyed when the Yankees burned Richmond.

In the 3rd Vol of CAVALIERS & PIONEERS, p.275. Cornelius Dabney of King William Co receives a patent for 400 acres of new land in Hanover Co on the North side of the South Anna (Rivanna R) adj Thomas Meriwether & Richard Philips. 10 Dec 1724. And on 27 Sep 1729 [p.362] he apparently patented another 400 acres adjacent Mr. Richard Philips, Mr. Cornelius Dabney & Thomas Meriwether's line. He was still listed as "of King William Co".
